The watches in Mark Hendricks’ collection are not just watches. They are timepieces—all 65 of them.
A jeweler for Lee Michaels, his collection ranges from a Disney watch he received when he was 12 to “the glaucoma,” a watch as big as a silver dollar and thick as a double-stuffed Oreo. The priciest one in his collection costs about $16,000.
These aren’t just museum pieces—Hendricks wears one every day, and not as fashion accessories.
“We are creatures of habit, and I will look at my watch probably about 60 times a day,” Hendricks says.
He loves the mathematics and machinery of a mechanically winding watch. “It took someone to sit down and think about how much energy can this spring produce off of this piece to turn this wheel to make a one-hour revolution and to make a 60-minute revolution.”
What doesn’t he love about watches? The start and end of daylight-saving time.
“I think I changed the time on maybe a thousand watches that day,” he says. “My index finger and thumb were killing me.”
