The new wave

“Its an old Lloyd Cole song I always liked to play on guitar and sing to chicks,” laughs Lee Barbier, guitarist with 2CV, about how he came to name his new project. Barbier is the longtime guitarist for The Myrtles, and just for the record, his new band is pronounced “deaux cheveaux.” So what does a Baton Rouge band named after the stylish ’60s Citroen car designed to compete with the VW Beetle sound like?

“We’re still figuring that out,” admits Barbier’s fellow guitarist Dave Quinlan. “We’ve started recording three songs, and every song we write sounds completely different than the one before.”

While bassist John Sullivan of the Fred Weaver Band and drummer Creighton Durant of the Dimestore Troubadors help flesh out 2CV’s eclectic taste, Barbier says he reached back to the high school vaults for other influences for the new project. The Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen and Psychedelic Furs are first to come to his mind. “I wanted to move to Europe back then and drive around the countryside in a 2CV with a girl that looked like Twiggy.”

“And you don’t want to do that anymore?” Quinlan quickly retorts. Rest assured, Dave, he does. myspace.com/2cv
