Baton Rouge has the nation’s first 24-hour Smoothie King, and it’s in a hospital.

Franchisees Sean Cangelosi and Patrick Fritscher opened a location of the chain in Our Lady of the Lake hospital on Feb. 10. It is Smoothie King’s second hospital location overall. The first opened in Houston, Texas.

Cangelosi says he and Fritscher had looked into opening in the hospital for a few years.

“As Baton Rouge has gotten fuller with Smoothie King locations, you have to get creative in looking for the next opportunity,” Cangelosi says. “The 24-hour idea came from [Fritscher]. His wife works in the hospital and knows the ins and outs of what happens there, with people always being there and those people needing a healthy option.”

The Smoothie King is located in the hospital campus’ food court on the first floor, which also houses Subway and CC’s Coffee. This is Cangelosi’s seventh location. He started franchising Smoothie Kings in 2001.
