Your guide to king cakes in Baton Rouge

While the rest of the country continues on the path of making themselves better with diet and exercise, Louisiana welcomes the arrival of another tradition—Mardi Gras. And with that holiday comes the delicious, sweet and rich king cakes.

The Capital City is no slouch when it comes to its selection of this seasonal treat. 225 Dine compiled a list and details for just a few of the people making treats you won’t want to miss.

One of the more popular home-bakers in town, Nannette Mayhall, has been making rich, cream cheese-based king cakes for nearly three decades. Fillings and flavors include raspberry, chocolate toffee, praline and blueberry. She works out of a commercial kitchen in her house and accepts orders by telephone. Gourmet Girls is once again doing its ever-popular king cake cupcakes and taking orders for king cakes. Both are made using brioche. The cupcakes are topped with icing and edible glitter and gold. They are priced at $4.75 per and are available in sets of four, six and 12. The full-sized cakes are stuffed with cream cheese and come in cinnamon and praline. The cakes range in price from $25-$50. Both locations of Calandro’s Supermarket are now offering king cakes. The store’s bakeries offer up to 50 styles, and the cakes range from $12.99-$19.99, depending on the amount of fillings. Among the flavors are praline and cream, red velvet and Calandro’s special, which is a vanilla cake with cream cheese, pecans and coconut.

If you’re downtown, pop into Strands Café, for a slice of modern or French-style king cake as well as a king cake latte. The café also ships its cakes. Call 344-5346 for more information.

Thee Heavenly Donut has had a head start on the season since the release of its Christmas king cakes. With Mardi Gras around the corner, the donut shop is doing a more traditional take. Call 753-7711 for more information.

Both Baum’s locations are serving and shipping an array of king cakes, including traditional cinnamon, cream cheese and Bavarian cream. Brownie and cream cheese is one of this year’s new filling options, too. Get more information.

Cake Jewels is serving up king cake-flavored cake balls as well as king cakes in flavors such as praline, cinnamon, lemon cream cheese and red velvet.
