Fast Break: Pupusas, tacos and tostadas at La Salvadoreña Pupuseria

If you’ve never had a pupusa, it’s time to get yourself to La Salvadoreña.

Along Nicholson Drive just north of LSU, this El Salvadoran pupuseria is serving up the Central American speciality: a thick, pillowy corn tortilla stuffed with cheese, beans, shrimp, pork cracklins, zucchini and loroco or jalapeños. The former food truck has expanded to the space that once housed Willie’s Chicken & Waffles, and it’s become a staple for campus and downtown lunchers looking for a quick bite.

La Salvadoreña’s pupusas come hot off the grill with that perfect touch of greasiness you expect from a good from-scratch tortilla, and pulling apart a pupusa de queso treats you to the sight and smell of gooey, melty cheese. They’re buttery and soft on the palate, with enough flavor on the inside to show up through the thick layers of tortilla.

In addition to pupusas, La Salvadoreña is cooking up tostadas, tacos, tamales, baleadas and bigger plate specials that include whole fried fish.

The tostadas come piled high with fajita steak, beans, pico de gallo, cabbage, a house sauce—sort of a spicy mayo—grated cheese and avocado, a powerfully flavorful and creative take on toppings for a toasted tortilla. The tacos, meanwhile, are simpler, served street-style on two corn tortillas with pineapple and onion pico de gallo. It’s that authentic delectability of seedy, greasy taco truck fair without the feeling of taking your life into your hands.

If you’re looking for something a little different for a midday meal, La Salvadoreña is an adventurous—but reliably tasty–pick.

La Salvadoreña Pupuseria is at 3285 Nicholson Drive.
