A favorite of many book clubs, this novel provides a fascinating look into a country that is isolated by the West yet manages to remain a player in the international arena. The author, an English literature teacher at University of Tehran, was expelled for refusing to wear a veil. She invites seven of her female students to gather at her house for weekly readings and discussions of several Western literary works. Her report of these gatherings provides a window into a culture and circum-stances that are “alien” to most Western readers. Azar Nafisi left Iran in 1995 and currently resides in the United States.
Facilitated by Robi Wooddy, Ed.D., an Educational consultant and a former university administrator and professor in International & Multicultural Education.
