Event Picks: Halloween celebrations, Book Festival

The Capital City does Halloween right. Get your costumes ready for a few nights on the town.

The fun starts Wednesday as 225 hosts its second #movienightbr. The event features a screening of the comedy Hocus Pocus at 7 p.m. Register and get more information. If you need a refresher on the film, it stars Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and pre-Sex and the City Sarah Jessica Parker as three witch sisters who are resurrected to bring a reign of terror on Salem, Massachusetts. Hot off being ranked the second top haunt in the country by Hauntworld.comThe 13th Gate will provide scares through Saturday. The event’s hours are 6:30 p.m.-11:30 p.m. Tickets are $25, and $20 for Necropolis 13. Group rates and discounts are available. The haunted house will also be open next Friday and Saturday. SMILEY ANDERS10/31 Consortium’s annual Halloween Parade kicks off Saturday at 2 p.m. This year’s theme is Dia de los Muertos, and the grand marshal is Smiley Anders. This year’s king is Todd McCoy, and the queen is Jessica Miller. The parade starts at the corner of Government and St. Phillip streets and will run through downtown Baton Rouge. 10/31 Consortium is a local Halloween-themed organization that provides resources for children and aims to inspire and encourage Baton Rouge youth. This year’s charity beneficiaries include the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital and the Big Buddy Program. Other Halloween events around town: Manship Theatre hosts a double feature Wednesday, starting at 7 p.m. with CAM2CAMThe Damned will follow at 9 p.m. Tickets are $9.50 per film or watch both for $10. Get more information at manshiptheatre.org.

Huey’s Bar hosts Nightmare on 3rd Street Friday with music from DJ PushPlay and DJ Dunn. There will be a costume contest. No cover. 7 p.m. RSVP and get more information.

Lagniappe Records will screen The Rocky Horror Picture Show Friday at 7 p.m. Cover is $5. RSVP and get more information. Manship Theatre will also screen the ’80s classic at 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Tickets are $10.
