Description: Baton Rouge residents will have a chance to discover the power of sacred dance at the labyrinth in BREC’s City Park at two free events on October 5 and October 12. The labyrinth is located behind the Baton Rouge Gallery at Perkins Road and Dalrymple Drive. The events are free and open to people of all ages. In the event of rain, the events will be held inside the Baton Rouge.

On Sunday, October 12 at 6 pm, practitioners from Bayou Shimmy will offer a demonstration of Sufi whirling in the City Park labyrinth. Whirling is the primary purification practice of many Sufi traditions. When dancers whirl, they always whirl to the left (counterclockwise) because it aligns them with the spinning of the universe. As they spin, their left hand faces down and the right hand faces upward, creating an electrical circuit that receives and gives energy which also passes through their hearts, blessing the earth below them. It is a form of sacred meditation. Following the lecture demonstration, participants will be invited to whirl or walk they labyrinth as they choose.
