Description: Witness a film about hope and survival during one of the worst natural disasters in American history.
Award-winning filmmaker, lecturer and photojournalist Mike Shiley will present his documentary Dark Water Rising on Wednesday, January 31 at 7:30 p.m. in the Cotillion Ballroom. The film documents the heroic efforts of animal rescue units in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Over 50,000 dogs and cats were left behind in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina due to FEMA’s requirement that all animals be left behind in a mandatory evacuation. A dedicated and compassionate group of volunteer rescuers and animal welfare groups from around the world risked their lives to sledgehammer down doors and brave toxic floodwaters in a truly heroic effort to save nearly 10,000 animals.
Dark Water Rising has been selected as a permanent part of the Hurricane Katrina exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution.
Shiley has lived in and traveled through the Middle East, covered the war in Iraq, the tsunami in Southeast Asia and the war in Kosovo. His reports from the frontlines have aired on ABC World News Tonight, Nightline and three ABC affiliate stations.
He has produced five feature-length documentary films profiling the struggles, small victories and simple stories of the people of third world countries. His film, Inside Iraq, was selected to screen at 14 film festivals and has won Best Documentary three times.
