Description: Ava Haymon will celebrate the launch of her new book of poetry, Kitchen Heat, at the Baton Rouge Gallery’s Sunday@4 program September 17.
Published by Louisiana State University Press, Haymon’s book addresses the depth of domestic life with a brazen perspective. However, her unabashed accounts of the many subtle moments which define household life are not without a distinct, imaginative flair.
Poet Henry Taylor says that “Haymon has a contagious avidity for the world’s various offerings—beautiful and otherwise—which she observes through uniquely unsentimental eyes.” Fred Chappell remarks that “This strong collection shows how honest vision and the skill of a true poet can produce striking language and seething drama.”
From the universal trials between husband and wife to the mythological tale of one’s matriarchal origins, Haymon’s writing is bold and inventive.
She is the author of the poetry collection The Strict Economy of Fire. Haymon lives in Baton Rouge, where she teaches poetry writing, and in the summer she directs a writers’ retreat center in the mountains of New Mexico.
Her reading at the Baton Rouge Gallery will be free and open to the public.
