Fast Break: Midday meal at Smokin’ Aces

Going to Smokin’ Aces BBQ on a weekday at noon is like going to a backyard barbecue. There were a number of people hanging out around the single walk-up window when I arrived. And the limited seating—two picnic tables under an awning—would mean I could potentially have to talk to strangers.

The food, though, was reminiscent of a backyard barbecue feast.

I ordered the brisket plate with a side of green beans and macaroni and cheese. It doesn’t get much more American than that. The brisket was tender, the green beans came out steaming hot and buttery, and the macaroni was cheesy. All were satisfying.

Though the summer heat was almost overwhelming, even under the awning, I was pleasantly surprised by the meal. Another plus was the barbecue sauce served on the side. I prefer this to being served a plate of meat smothered with sauce, as some restaurants do.

The service was quick and the staff was friendly, as were the several lunch companions with whom I had to share a table.

Smokin’ Aces is located at 2504 Government St. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays.
