Gourmet Girls’ king cake cupcakes are a hit

About three weeks ago, Gourmet Girls owner Kathy Mangham had some leftover dough and decided to make some king cake cupcakes for the first time.

Later that afternoon, she brought a batch to Garden District Coffee, which sells a few other cupcakes she makes.

“I brought them at 4 p.m., and by 8 p.m., they were gone,” she says. “I was like, ‘Wait what?’ Sometimes, I’ll make a dozen cupcakes, and they’ll be there for maybe three days. They’re fresh, but it usually takes a while for them to sell out. This was surprising.”

Since then, Gourmet Girls’ king cake cupcakes have become a hit. After sharing a picture of the cupcakes on the catering and bakery business’ Facebook page, which got more than 200 likes and 30 shares and loads of comments, she can’t make them fast enough.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had anything this popular that sells so fast,” she says. “I think people like them because it’s your own individual king cake. They’re so big, but it’s not an entire king cake. They look luscious and they’re over the top.”

The treat is made with brioche dough with fillings such as cinnamon, cream cheese, praline and chocolate. These cupcakes are made-to-order and can be purchased by calling 252-0999 or e-mailing [email protected].
