Think Twice Style: Well Suited – ‘Casablanca’

Photos by Tate Tullier

Casablanca is one of the greatest films of all time. It’s classic, melodramatic, intriguing and moody. But really, how can you go wrong with Humphrey Bogart as the brooding, droopy-eyed Rick Blaine? You can’t.

The story, set in 1941 Casablanca, follows the reunion of Rick Blaine and his long lost love Isla Lund. Isla is now married to Victor Laszlo, a leader in the Czech resistance. Long story short, Isla and Victor need papers to make their way to the United States to continue their resistance work. Political and personal debacles swing back and forth and are made even more dramatic in black and white … which leads me to the inspiration behind this look.

I found this velvet tuxedo at a vintage sale about a year ago and had to have it. Rick Blaine is known for wearing his classic white tuxedo jacket throughout most of the film. I wanted to play with the light and dark in this look and keep it classic with a red lip. Ladies, do not be scared to don a tuxedo jacket instead of your usual cocktail dress! Styled correctly, it can be even more dramatic and unexpected than a gown. Keep your jewelry simple—dainty rings and minimalist earrings. Wear your hair up to show off a bit of skin. Aside from your red lip, forego the rest of your makeup bag. A short swipe of mascara is probably the only other thing you might need. The act of keeping things simple can be far more striking than overdoing it.
