One is the loneliest number, and today the uniquely talented Harry Nilsson stands alone as the most underrated singer-songwriter of the 20th century. A new film called Who Is Harry Nilsson?, the first comprehensive documentary of Nilsson’s life as a much-beloved but strangely underexposed artist of the 1960s and 1970s, will screen at the Manship Theatre April 2.

Many know the songs, not the singer. His hits “Everybody’s Talkin’” from Midnight Cowboy, “One,” “Without You,” and “Coconut,” along with remarkably fresh collaborations with John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Frank Zappa and the Monkees, defined the era. Yet the late performer with the jester attitude, silky voice and multi-octave range is all but forgotten today. In the film, the Smothers Brothers, Yoko Ono, Jon Voight, Robin Williams and others weigh in with their memories and their insight into the real Nilsson. Find out why everybody’s talkin’ about him on April 2 at 7 p.m. Following the film, the Scoundrel’s Auxiliary band will perform a special live set of Nilsson classics. manshiptheatre.org
