Looking for a place to have a fun-filled family day AND learn a thing or two about your surroundings? Check out some of the spring festivals in Baton Rouge this month. My children and I spent last Sunday at the Earth Day celebration held along North Boulevard. I recommend marking it on your calendar for next year. The day offered a good balance of education and enjoyment. The children participated in hands-on activities teaching about soil erosion, farm animals, local art, and Louisiana gardening. However, I most enjoyed watching my children ever so carefully tie string around a cornhusk doll and learn about the history and tradition of Louisiana. In addition, we visited the “build your own birdhouse” station, made textured drawings of Louisiana wildlife animals, and learned how to build a fort out of bamboo and palm leaves. The festival had the relaxed feeling that I so often long for on busy Sunday afternoon along with cheerful music, majestic oaks providing shade, park benches, and lots of food on sticks and in cones!
I would also recommend checking out the Bluebonnet Swamp Louisiana Day Celebration. The focus is on celebrating our state through education about the state symbols, heritage, music, food…you get the picture. Again, the location is great and the admission very reasonable. See you at the festivals!
