The smell of insulin in the morning

May 9, 2007
By Maggie Heyn Richardson

“How’re the cinnamon rolls?” I asked the young barista at Perks Coffee and Tea. They looked pretty good. He scrunched up his face and whispered knowingly, “I don’t really do sweets for breakfast.” More for me.

The glaze crackled as I wedged in the first bite. There were juicy, plump raisins hidden amid the twirl, along with a healthy blast of cinnamon (the world’s most underrated spice). This was good. It occurred to me that coffee shops spend too much time on muffins and not enough on this everyday pastry. It also occurred to me how nice it is all that Atkins hooey is dead because morning was made for a good, strong carb and who wants to feel guilty about it?

That said, I’ve been on a tear lately, weaving in all manner of sweets into my AM routine. Man, has it been fun. Like a second childhood. Concerning doughnuts, it’s a tough choice: Mary Lee, with the fat, puffy body and gossamer texture? Krispy Kreme with its cap of hardened glaze? Baum’s is my new discovery – simple and not over-the-top sweet. But then there are also Thee Heavenly Donut (formerly known as Meche’s), chunky and full of substance.

Share your faves, please.

any hot donut...
and agree whole heartedly w/ the lack of good cinnamon rolls in the coffee shops!!

as far as a spice, i've been adding cinnamon to a homemade spice mix: whole coriander, whole fennel, whole black peppercorns, red pepper flakes and coarse sea salt (and dried basil sometimes); heat, grind...put on grilled shrimp, quail, broiled fish...whatever...also add siracha sauce to the mix...lime and basil...needs tweaking but a nice change from the "cajun spices"

Spice blend sounds great. Thanks for sharing it. MHR
