If you can get over the wink-wink pun of the name and any notion of the new downtown restaurant being a traditional pizza-by-the-slice joint, Schlittz & Giggles is actually pretty good at what it does. Traditional slice slingers keep racks of cheese pizzas warm, then pepper on toppings and shove it in the oven for 90 seconds to get the cheese melty and the crust crisp. Schlittz & Giggles’ slices are more limited, but just as good.
Eight bucks buys two large, paper-thin slices (large, meaning the angle measures slightly more than 45 degrees) and a soda.
The Mmmmmeaty, covered in pepperoni, sweet Italian sausage, ham and bacon, is an excellent blend, and the plain cheese pizza holds its own, but tastes better under crushed red pepper and a snowfall of parmesan.
Beyond individual slices and whole pies ($17 for pepperoni, $20 for edgy veggie or flyin’ Hawaiian), Schlittz & Giggles offers salads and panini pressed sandwiches. The Third Street restaurant is lively with first-floor tables, a four-booth loft, a bar and outdoor seating. Six flatscreen TVs broadcast sports from all angles. But it is the ready-to-eat goodness of hot slices that keeps patrons on time and in trouble because it’s just too easy to order one more to go.
