Perhaps as well as anyone, place kicker Chris Jackson knows the past two LSU football coaches.
As a freshman in 2003, he was part of the Tigers’ national-title team under Nick Saban.
In 2005 and in 2006, he played under Les Miles in back-to-back 11-2 finishes.
“I’ve seen both sides of both of them,” Jackson says.
He says both are intense men who know what it takes to win.
“Coach Saban has a real hard-nosed, strictly business-like approach. If you mess up or whatever, and rightfully so, he’ll come down on you as hard he wants to.
“Coach Miles on the other hand is a little nicer, I don’t want to say passive, but he’ll let you know but not in the real hard-core way. He’ll say, ‘Man, you know you messed up on that play.’ He’s a little more personal to talk with.”
Because he played for both coaches, Jackson says he’s been asked to compare the two many times.
“When I think about it, they’re both great coaches. They have different personalities and different quirks, but in the end it comes down to winning and they were both successful.”
Although Jackson signed with the Buffalo Bills and has also tried out with the Detroit Lions, he hasn’t made the NFL cut, so he re-enrolled at LSU where he’s preparing to graduate, and staying in shape in case of another NFL callup.
“Both (Saban and Miles) know how to get the team prepared to win. The bottom line is winning and that’s what they do,” Jackson says.
