Hot Lunch: Al’s Chicago Dogs and Polish

The quirky dive on O’Neal Lane could be a Key West conch shack or a San Diego taqueria, but it’s actually a hot dog stand in the middle of the Baton Rouge ‘burbs. Al’s Chicago Dogs and Polish, named for local bluesman “Chicago Al,” serves up authentic dogs nestled in soft, poppy seed buns with classic toppings. At only $3.50, the seven-item all-beef Famous Original features mustard, chopped onion, fresh tomato wedges, a kosher pickle spear, celery seed, sport peppers and the distinct, neon green sweet relish found in Windy City doggeries. The Maxwell Street all-beef Polish is bedecked in Düsseldorf mustard, sautéed onions and bell peppers. Order at the window, then grab a shady table. The place also features po-boys and snowballs, but the reason to come is definitely the dogs.
