With mixed martial arts fighting growing ever more popular, it’s no wonder the U.S. Army would sponsor local fights and recruit tough guys in the bleachers to become new soldiers.
Baton Rouge’s Gladiators Academy continues to dominate the field. At a testosterone-soaked event in Denham Springs dubbed “No Surrender,” the Academy’s fighters went two for three in the money fights, plus picked up two wins in the amateur bouts. The event featured top pro and amateur fighters from five states and was a warm-up for the Oct. 13 Punishment at the P-MAC.
Since opening its doors two years ago on Florida Boulevard in the eastern end of the parish, the Gladiators Academy has become a dominant force in combat sports. “Here in Baton Rouge, there’s nothing else that comes close,” says Dr. Tom Cockerham, a fight doctor with 1,500 boxing and MMA bouts under his belt. “The proof is in the pudding.”
Gladiators Academy’s MMA fight record stands at 55 wins and 10 losses.
Budweiser co-sponsored “No Surrender” along with the U.S. Army, which even brought in a rock-climbing wall along and several recruiters. And in case anyone doubted that kicking serious behind isn’t patriotic, the Army marched an honor guard into center ring for the presentation of the colors and the singing of the national anthem. gladiatorsacademy.com
