It takes more than notebooks and pens to get today’s college student through a typical day.

Cynthia Miller is a fifth-year senior at LSU who graduates in December. The 23-year-old anthropology major agreed to open her backpack—er, tote bag—for an anthropological peek at her daily life.

1. Text books

• Thinking Medieval: An Introduction to the Study of the Middle Ages by Marcus Bull (for a class in early medieval history)

• Moments Littéraires: Anthologie Pour Cours Intermédiaires by Bette G. Hirsch and Chantal P. Thompson (for French

literature class)

2. 5-subject spiral-bound notebook

A college campus staple—paper and pen remain the best way to take notes, plus you don’t have to worry if you’ve charged the battery.

3. The brown bag lunch

College is expensive, so who can afford to eat out every day? Today’s menu: an old-fashioned, grade-school turkey sandwich and a bag of chips.

4. 30-gigabyte iPod (IN BLACK)

For passing the time listening to tunes between classes.

5. LSU tote bag

Contains her laptop, an umbrella, various pens, a lighter and cigarettes.

6. Cell phone

For text messaging during class.
