Here’s what Chammah’s packing in the compartment beneath her scooter seat:
• Golf towel in case of rain
• Night goggles in case of bugs
• Motorcycle lock
• Black visor for helmet
• “Lucky pickle,” a painted glass Russian peanut
• Tin case with Yogi green tea bags, nail file, lighter, pens and architect’s scale
For Emma Chammah, buying a Honda Metropolitan scooter was not some kind of reaction to gas-guzzling SUVs, it was actually the 23-year-old architect’s first vehicle purchase—ever. “It’s not about taking a moral stance on pollution,” Chammah says. “I don’t mind that people drive cars. I just couldn’t rationalize buying a car for four people when I’m just one.”
The Tulane grad rides from her Spanish Town home to her downtown office and back every day. Boss Trey Trahan calls her “The Urbanite.” If she feels daring, she will even transport structural models home by holding them in her lap.
