“Only Radiohead can make a grilled McChicken sandwich seem surreal. I’m spending my lunch break in my car listening to the band’s new album, In Rainbows, and reluctantly eating fast food just so I can have a full hour with the music uninterrupted. The amazing thing is I paid less for the album than for my value meal.
Radiohead released this album sans record label and gave fans the option of ordering the deluxe box set ($80) or downloading it for whatever they feel like paying. Hearing Thom Yorke’s trademark howl on “Reckoner,” I know that I’m going to buy the box set anyway. A friend told me he paid $25 for the download. The music means that much to him. As I let the harmonies wash over me inside my own parking lot music box, I can’t help but think we both underpaid.”
