On creating his recommended Louisiana books list
“There are dozens of interesting books about Louisiana and by Louisianians. I selected my personal favorites and attempted to balance fiction and nonfiction with an obvious emphasis on our year-round pastime, politics. I’ve added Richard White’s book, Kingfish: The Reign of Huey P. Long, as No. 3(A) because it provides a different viewpoint than T. Harry’s Huey Long. The near misses on the list are The Fighting Tigers by Pete Finney, which chronicles LSU’s football history, and John Folse’s new cookbook, which includes a cultural commentary as well as recipes.”
1. Rising Tide by John Barry
2. A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole
3. Huey Long by T. Harry Williams
3(A). Kingfish: The Reign of Huey P. Long by Richard White
4. The Earl of Louisiana by A.J. Liebling
5. Bayou Farewell: The Rich Life and Tragic Death of Louisiana's Cajun Coast by Mike Tidwell
6. anything by James Lee Burke
7. Inside the Carnival by Wayne Parent
8. All the King's Men by Robert Warren Penn
9. The Last Hayride by John Maginnis
10. A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines
