Louisiana’s specialty meat shops do astonishing things with the parts of a pig, but boudin, cracklins and the like aren’t so easy to find in Baton Rouge—unless you hit Ronnie’s, smack dab on Florida Boulevard. It ain’t pretty, but inside, authenticity rules.
Handwritten signs showcase fresh boudin (yes, from a slow cooker), smoked sausage, meat pies, fried turkey wings and lunch specials like pork roast and meat loaf. Every day, cracklins emerge from bubbling vats and are shellacked with Ronnie’s jarring spice blend. The freezer’s bounty includes jalapeno-stuffed chickens, ponce (stuffed stomach lining) and marinated rabbit. Another location, Ronnie’s Boudin and Seafood, features a lunch buffet, and is at 1680 Lobdell in Port Allen, 381-9208.
