Youth baseball players participated in an unusual tournament in Addis this spring, a competition utterly devoid of the “ping” of aluminum bats striking balls, not even once. The Gettin’ Started Showdown tournament required batters to use only wooden bats, nowadays strictly the domain of big leaguers. Teams from across South Louisiana gathered in Addis for the weekend-long tournament, sponsored by Baton Rouge’s own Marucci Bat Co., which crafts custom wood bats for dozens of Major League Baseball sluggers. Visit 225batonrouge.com and check out an audio slide show to hear what players and coaches had to say about swinging it old-school, and enjoy the rarely-heard sound of baseballs striking wood.
