Entergy Scissorhands

Apparently, the carved-out, Bonsai look is intentional. Entergy Regional Manager Bill Benedetto says when installing power lines, Entergy’s two purposes are to ensure reliable electrical services to customers and to avoid harming the tree—even at the aesthetic expense, such as the trees along Government Street near Park Boulevard. He says cutting down trees is a last resort.

And don’t expect anything to change anytime soon; Benedetto says burying every power line is a major construction project that would slow down Baton Rouge for years. “When you start digging, you disrupt the roots and do a lot of damage to the trees,” he says. Add to that the task of reconfiguring all services to enable underground service—a chore requiring the cooperation of both commercial and residential customers.
