Musical buses

It’s a well-choreographed dance, taking place every morning at 6:50 a.m., 8:10 a.m. and ending at 3:25 p.m. Some 70 buses pull into Independence Park twice every morning, carrying more than 5,400 students. Once all buses are accounted for, drivers open the doors and the dance begins. Children ranging from elementary to high school go running about from the buses that picked them up that morning to the bus that will carry them to their respective schools and vice versa in the afternoon. The East Baton Rouge Parish bus transfer system has been in place for 15 years, providing transportation service to students who choose to attend school outside of their school zone, including magnet school students. “It may look like chaos but the system works very efficiently and safely,” EBR schools spokesperson Chris Trahan says. “There are no changes in the works.”
