Shearwater
Palo Santo (Expanded Edition)
Misra
This album came out last year, but has been gaining great ground. NPR called them the best act of the SXSW festival, and their recent album Palo Santo made it to the top of most critics best of 2006 list, mine included. Jonathon Meiburg makes what could be described as a more restrained and mature version of the melodramatic rock Arcade Fire produces, with better singing. The former Okkervil River member (Shearwater started as a side project of Meiburg and Will Scheff, but is solely a Meiburg’s operation now) blasts through the fog with his incredible pipes and thundering herd pulse on tracks like "Red Sea, Black Sea" and "Seventy-Four Seventy-Five" and delivers flickering candle-lit ballads like "Nobody" and "Failed Queen" with equal aplomb. Be sure to catch Shearwater Friday, March 30, at the Red Star with Xiu Xiu and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone.
Essential Tracks: "Red Sea, Black Sea" and "Nobody"
Recommended if you like: Jeff Buckley, his father Tim Buckley, Nick Drake and catharsis.
