Placebot
High Tones/LowTones
Self-release
I have been reacquainting myself with electronic music lately for a writing project, and Placebot, a side project from Bones and The New Orleans Bingo! Show drummer Scott Campbell, is wedging in perfectly with the low buzz and hum of the Kraftwerk and Klaus Schulze that I have been taking in. High Tones/Low Tones is a collection of subtle synthetic pleasures, sometimes not much more than a pulse and a beat like on the cryptically titled "(0+0) 497/A+B+X" and "Loner," sometimes more extravagant arrangements of samples and atmosphere like on "Eternal Motion Machine" but all of them bear Campbell’s attention to touch and detail, much like on the exquisite fliers he’s produced for local shows. It’s the kind of electronica that you might at first put on as background music, but soon enough it will start creeping to the foreground and suck you in.
Essential Tracks: "Loner" and "Point of Silence"
Recommended if you like: Trans Am, Brian Eno, the hum or your fridge mixing with the sounds of birds outside
