Modest Mouse
We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank
Sony/BMG
The intrepid Issaquah, Wash. troop never really grabbed me, even when "Float On" was being broadcast from all directions, even in Kidz Bop commercials, but with the band's latest, I finally succumbed to the siren howl. There are a number of songs with the signature Modest Mouse chant, like "Fire It Up" and "Education" and those are all well and good, but the epic pop workouts like "Florida" influenced as much by Duran Duran as it was the Pixies really make the band shine. Having legendary Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr as a full-time undoubtedly has had an effect, but this still sounds like a Modest Mouse record. The difference is, it sounds like a really good one this time.
Essential tracks: "Florida," "Dashboard," and "Fire it Up"
Recommended if you like: The Pixies, The Cars, The Pixies and teen angst. Did I mention the Pixies?
