Donna's favorite kitsch

1. Snowdome containing a treasure chest and floating fish from Florida (her childhood favorite)

2. Snowdome with two dolphins on a seesaw, from Florida

3. Harry Truman bobblehead

4. Teddy Roosevelt bobblehead (he's holding a teddy bear)

5. Snowdome with Frances McDormand kneeling in the snow, as in the movie Fargo, from Fargo, N.D.

TV viewers know her for her direct, no-nonsense delivery of the evening news and her comfortable banter with co-anchor George Sells. Polished and poised, she’s the trusted friend at 6 and 10 who has kept us informed for 26 years.

That’s Donna Britt, the WAFB news anchor.

Donna Britt at home enjoys feeding her sense of humor with a steady supply of what she calls “museum trash.” You might call it “crap.”

Her collection of plastic kitsch ranges from snowdomes to backscratchers to presidential bobbleheads. The tackier, the better. “As a child, I started with the snowdomes,” says Britt. “It was all about my inner child going, ‘Oh, I like this.’ When I grew up, the reasons changed for why I was so drawn to them, but it was still my inner child going, ‘Oh, it’s tacky, I love it.’”

At its height, her snowdome collection grew to 300—a collection spiraling out of control, she says.

She’s given away most of her snowdomes, turning her attention to bobbleheads.

“I’ve quit,” she says. “But it’s kind of like Al Pacino in The Godfather—they keep pulling you back in. They’re so ugly, they’re cute; they’re so useless, they’re a treasure.”
