Alejandro Escovedo is being completely honest—he barely remembers the first time he performed in Baton Rouge. “We enjoyed ourselves and kind of celebrated the whole day,” he says of his band’s show at The Chimes back in 1987. Touring has changed a lot since then for the Austin-based songwriter. He has achieved cult status and critical acclaim for one, but his recent recovery from Hepatitis C, though complete, has kept him from touring as much as he’d like.
“We used to tour the whole year, never stop,” Escovedo says, “We’d just get in the van. Nothing would be planned out. We would crash gigs of people like Dash Rip Rock.”
His latest album is The Boxing Mirror, produced by former Velvet Underground founder John Cale, and wherever Escovedo tours in support of it, he is not without a useful gift from his wife: a pocket-size string-changing kit for guitars. “It’s kind of a fey little gift, I mean, most guitar players would never have this,” he says smiling. “But they all tell me how cool it is.”
