No GFL festival, but still plenty of rock

The wind may not be in the sails for the Gas Food Lodging festival (designed to lure bands traveling to Austin’s massive South By Southwest industry showcase) like it was last time this year.

“My feelings are that GFL isn’t really a festival unless we are a ‘pay one price’ type of set up,” explains MicroMogul talent buyer, Joel Philips.

Still, without the umbrella, area clubs and promoters are making March a stellar month for live music.

“I took it upon myself to have our own GFL fest,” Says Aaron Scruggs, booking agent for the Spanish Moon. “This year’s fest is definitely our best lineup yet.”

Among the highlights:

Monday, March 12: Silversun Pickups & The Rosebuds at Spanish Moon.

L.A.-based Silversun Pickups’ album Carnavas made a tremendous showing on most of the top 10 lists around the country with their distortion-laden, laid back rock. Opening will be the infectious, literate rock of The Rosebuds of Raleigh, N.C., a local favorite from last year.

Tuesday, March 13: The Mary Timony Band and Georgie James at Red Star

Mary Timony (formerly of Helium) returns with her intricate guitar work that has one foot in the conservatory and another in the garage. Her show last year at Chelsea’s Café was one of the best of the year. Georgia James is a dream-pop duo of John Davis (formerly of Q and Not U) and singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn.

Friday, March 30: Xiu Xiu and Shearwater at Red Star

Xiu Xiu returns to the city with a breathless, explosive delivery and a mix of experimental percussion and New Wave electropop the band showed last year. Joining them is Shearwater, featuring multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Meiburg (of Okkeril River fame), whose mix of dramatic vocals and strident rock that made Palo Santo one of my favorite albums of 2006.
