HERE: LSU art student
THERE: Professional artist, Paris, France
Why did you leave Baton Rouge?
I graduated. I actually stayed the summer after, but what are you going to do with a fine arts degree? I moved to New York for a while, and I guess it was around the spring of 1995 that I went to Paris for the first time. I just loved it and felt at home right away.
What do you miss?
Iced tea. I can make it there [in Paris], but it’s not the same. Good fried chicken. Also, in Baton Rouge and Little Rock, Ark., where I’m from, there is an easiness of life. There’s more space to spread out. There’s a comfort about it.
What don’t you miss?
Cars. In Paris, I just walk everywhere or take the subway. Also, advertisements. I don’t have a TV in my apartment.
What does Paris have that Baton Rouge doesn’t?
Other than the obvious? I think the biggest difference for me is living in a foreign language. I like shifting back and forth between English and French, playing with the language.
What’s essential when you come back?
Mexican food, a drive through campus, visiting with friends, Perks, Louie’s and dinner at Michael Crespo and Libby Johnson’s house (his mentors).
Your last trip to Baton Rouge?
I came home to go to my high school reunion in Little Rock, then I drove down here [Baton Rouge] to touch base with the gallery [Baton Rouge Gallery]. They are putting together a show at Nicholls State in August. I will have two pieces in that.
