When Amelia Cox and John Norris of Baton Rouge Gallery issued a call for their splashy summer exhibition CURRENT: The Aesthetics of Contemporary Culture, they had no idea what kind of art would come back. And that was kind of the point.
“This is our first national show in a long time, and we wanted to be open to artists who haven’t shown here before,” Norris says. “So we wanted to make the guidelines pretty general.” Expect a heavy dose of graphic posters and paintings related to rapidly changing technologies.
Submissions from as far as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City have been juried by Print magazine’s Associate Editor James Gaddy—a product of LSU Manship School’s graduate program—and former LSU Museum of Art Director Donna McAlear. Gaddy admits the judging criteria were hazy, but the selections rely on a younger, more contemporary feel. Meaning...“I don’t want to say ‘hipper,’” Gaddy says.
Hipper.
The opening reception is Wednesday, June 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Baton Rouge Gallery. The exhibit runs June 4 through 29. batonrougegallery.org.
