A very famous wine maker recently told me, “There is nothing wrong with dropping a few ice cubes into a glass of wine, red or white.” That surprised me because I’d always thought of ice as the ultimate wine no-no, except in Sangria. Things have loosened considerably, and the long-held “code” for wine drinking is now more of a guideline. That said, I tapped Laurel Dennis, one of the wine gurus at Churchill’s for a wine that would stand up to food, summer’s heat and even a cube or two of ice. Churchill’s on Jefferson Highway has a wide selection of wines. When I pushed for a summer refresher, Laurel wanted to “think about it.” No sooner had we hung up than my phone rang back with her pronouncement, “I’ve got it.” Her recommendation: Jaffurs Roussanne from Santa Barbara County. “Roussanne is a Rhone varietal grown in California and is particularly nice from Santa Barbara. This wine has great mouth feel and is a fine alternative to Chardonnay or Pinot Gris. Full of honey and apricot flavors, it’s still dry and complex, great with light summer foods like salads. It will also hold up to fried chicken or even those crawfish tacos you like.” And yes, it’s OK to drop a couple of ice cubes in your glass.
