It’s a cornucopia of singles. Young and old dance and mingle among a smattering of cocktail tables and a live band. Most dress to impress, but jeans are definitely not frowned upon. Just when you think the crowd couldn’t get any more diverse, in walks the Marlboro man. Followed by your grandparents. Candles are your guiding light, and in some cases, your savior. Let’s face it, everyone looks good in the dark.

Appletini. Flirtini. Chocolatini. What ever happened to a good old-fashioned vodka martini up and so filthy-dirty it looks like pond water? Even olives are getting high-class, stuffed with bleu cheese and every other classy condiment known to man. Well, regardless of your martini persuasion, whether you are a purist or a faddist, Sullivan’s can take the edge off. They even have a pineapple-infused martini. It’s a knockout.

Most people thought it was a crazy idea. Opening a Japanese restaurant named after a natural disaster on top of a museum in downtown Baton Rouge? Thing is, the formula tested tried-and-true in Lafayette’s art district. With its airy, modern interior enlivened by splashes of Far Eastern flora, banks of pristine plate glass windows, a large wrap-around sushi bar and gorgeous terrace, Tsunami wasted little time setting the standard for downtown’s cosmopolitan ambience and attitude.

Maybe it’s the plethora of beers, spanning from sea to shining sea and far beyond. Maybe it’s the allure of having your name posted up on the wall of heroes who, like Magellan, have sampled the wares of the world when it comes to ales and stouts. Perhaps it’s the friendly service, the elbow-to-elbow crowds or the promise that a plate of cheese fries is only a snap of the fingers away. But perhaps most of all, it’s the Tiger spirit and the 20/20 sightline straight to the gates of LSU that lets The Chimes tug at the same heart strings Cheers did. Here’s to another couple of cold ones.

What are the ingredients for the Attitude Adjustment?

Posted by areaux1 on April 2, 2007 at 11:05 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I'm curious to know if any African American and other minority nightclubs were included in the lineup??? There are other nightclubs in Baton Rouge that may also be the best in some of these categories; this is a biased post, isn't it 225?

I agree with areaux1. I no longer reside in BR, but I do visit "home" quite often & I always wonder where minorities (i.e. African Americans, Hispanics, etc.) go to have fun. You should consider publishing a list that is geared toward professional minorities that are looking to relax & have a good time after a long day/week of work.

Thanks for writing in. 225 took open nominations from our readers for a period of a couple weeks, then sent out our survey with the top vote-getting nominations as the choices. These results are strictly what our readers told us they liked.

For the two people who are ranting about including African American and Hispanic {the so called minorities} in the nightclub categories I have two things to say!! Those that do not vote, do not get to complain!! The second thing is "Grow UP", every one is sick to death of the whining and complaining about not being included. If you go to any of the above mentioned clubs on any given night, you will find as many blacks, Hispanics, Asians..{as you will white people} If bias is going to ever be erased from the south, It will have to begin by doing away with the complaining that everything is so unfair!! I am fairly sure that this pole did not ask for color or ethnic background when it was taken, so how could it possibly be biased??? Why don't you try to be part of the Solution and not the problem!!!!!

I recommend Kontinuousevents.com for African-American hot spots and night life.

I'm a BR native and even though I haven't lived there for 15 years, I visit often - 3-4 times/yr. With all the recent change in infrastructure and the revitalization of downtown, I'm excited each time I'm there and see a new restaurant, boutique, bar, etc. Still, I'm saddened that the attitudes and mindsets in BR have not changed much at all. Re: the 3 comments earlier, I think its interesting that "David" took offense to the earlier comments by "Areaux1" and "clm616". I didn't read "whining" or "complaining" in either comment. On my most recent visit - 4th of July, I called several friends from BR both still in the city and transplants to other cities to find out about the newer, nicer spots for drinks, dinner, etc. with diverse crowds. Again, I was disappointed at the responses I got. Most felt that African Americans (professionals with $$ to spend - no less) are mistreated and/or are not welcomed so they tend not to patronize the newer places. I wonder when will this change? Its not just about fairness - there is nothing "fair" about customer service! I'm a business owner and my husband is an ER physician, we live in Atlanta and have become accustomed to very nice establishments with diverse customers - all with the same goal - to enjoy an evening out among friends and to meet new and interesting people...regardless of skin color. Even though most of my friends from high school and college in BR have moved away, I enjoy coming HOME and SEEING all the positive changes. I'll be even happier to EXPERIENCE the changes in attitudes. Come on BR - its 2007! By the way "David" its "poll" not "pole".

Marci, I just have to agree with you. David, you really went a little crazy on your own rant. While I kinda got the gist of what you're saying, it was off base. "Areaux1" and "clm616", you guys did insinuate that there was some sort of racial biased without even looking to how the poll (thank you Marci) was conducted. Dont be so quick to throw the race card in - I think that was that point Dave so inelloquently tried to make.

So, yeah, Im a white guy, 30 years old. I worked offshore and around the country. Spent a good stint in Houston where I was the minority. No biggie really. I still found plenty to do. I moved back to BR a couple of years ago and the attitude is definately different. It was the way I was looked at by blacks, the lack of politeness or general courtesy (maybe others too, but let's face it, South Louisiana is mainly black & white so I'm gonna run with it). It was something about BR I didnt notice growing up around here, only after leaving.

Here's my suggestion, and take it how you want. There is still lots of racism and stupidity and all that stuff in the world. How both sides treat each other is what's going to fix it. No pointing fingers by one side with false accusations, and no jumping the gun and flying off the handle by the other could really fix a lot of problems. Half the time, maybe it really is just bad customer service. Other times, unfortunately it's not. Be reeal though, it is a few bad apples ruining a good time for everyone. Because one waiter mistreats someone in a business because of race, it does not reflect the feelings of the patrons. I think, generally, we can and should trust each other.

All I do know for sure is that this board is supposed to be used for discussing fun places to go out and not the racial problems of America. "Areaux1" and "clm616"? Why not mention a few places to go out instead. Maybe Ill check em out too.
