His wife may not call him Coach, but everyone else does. Gov. Kathleen Blanco’s husband, Raymond Blanco, has been ubiquitously known by the brawny nickname since serving as a high school football coach in 1958. The name stuck even when Blanco switched positions from assistant coach at then-USL in Lafayette to dean of students in the late ’60s. He must have really hated “Ray.”
“When you’re a winning coach, you’re ‘Coach’ for life,” Blanco says, “When you’re losing, they call you something else. They can call me anything they like, as long as they call me for lunch.”
For those wondering what his official title is as the governor’s husband—you can call him First Gentleman.
