Tailgating season is close at hand.
We tracked down veteran tailgater Eric Ducote, one of the proprietors of Third Row Tailgating, and entertaining and cooking guru Holly Clegg, author of Trim and Terrific Home Entertaining the Easy Way.
1. Don’t ice whole kegs. Rather, run a copper coil through an ice chest. That way, the rest of the keg stays fresh for next week’s game.
2. Make shish kabobs—easy to cook, easy to eat.
3. Bring plenty of water, not just beer and alcohol.
4. Bring an extra shirt and pair of socks in case it rains.
5. Especially in September and October, figure out how much ice you need, then double it.
6. If you’re attending a tailgate party, bring something other than hot dogs.
7. Buy meat on Friday and marinate it overnight.
8. Bring edible containers—like a hollowed out bread filled with dip.
9. This is the Sportsman’s Paradise—exotic meats are always a hit.
10. Tailgating is a group effort. Showing up at 7:30 a.m. to set up isn’t just one person’s job.
