Joel Mercado-See – Pop/Indie

Thursday, July 20, 2006 10 pm

Red Star

222 Laurel Street, Baton Rouge

This 27-year old pianist, singer-songwriter from Houston brings his self-described “Alternative Soul Rock” to the Spanish Moon. The obvious comparison to make here is Ben Folds, which I would imagine Mercado-See is sick of, but he has a similar spirited passion and sense of orchestration woven into his songs. His delivery, however, packs a much sharper punch. >>More

20th Anniversary Phil Brady’s Blues Jam

Thursday, July 20, 2006 8PM, $10

Phil Brady’s

4848 Government Street, Baton Rouge

It seems like I’ve been going to Thursday night Blues jams at this venerable Mid City watering hole forever, but it’s only been a measly 20 years. The all-star lineup includes Baton Rouge legends Oscar Davis, Larry Garner, Luther Kent, James Johnson, Rudy Richard, Lil Ray Neal and Ernest Scott. Cover includes food by Joe Hall. >>More

The Terms, Dash Rip Rock, Spoonfed Tribe and We Landed on the Moon @ Studio Live

Friday July 21, 2006, 8:30 PM, $7

The Varsity Theatre

3353 Highland Rd, Baton Rouge

StudioLive, the music showcase at the Varsity produced by Maple Jam/ICON MES President, Greg Ladanyi, teams up with COX Communications bi-monthly to showcase an eclectic swath of the city’s musical talent. The Terms made their mark penning the theme song for LSU’s image makeover, and have been steadily gaining more and more national coverage. Dash Rip Rock, once a mainstay of the Baton Rouge live music scene, is poised for a glorious return as they finish "Hee Haw Hell," an epic mix of the band’s country-infused punk and comedy co-written by XM's Lou Brutus, Bill Davis, Jello Biafra, Mojo Nixon and Rich Seigel. North Texas jam-dance sensation Spoonfed Tribe and stunning local indie upstarts We Landed on the Moon! also appear on the bill. Proceeds to go to the MusiCares musicians’ aid charity. >>More

Meriwether – Rock

Friday, July 21 – Saturday 22, 2006 10pm

Chelsea’s Cafe

2857 Perkins Road, Baton Rouge

Meriwether proves to be the hardest working band in Baton Rouge this week, doing four shows in two days at the Caterie. Friday night, the boys are going acoustic, and plugging in for Saturday. There will be an early show, all-ages each night as well. No word as to whether the band will be offering backrubs or complimentary car washes as well, but one can hold out hope. >>More

The Southern Takeover Tour ’06 - Punk

Tuesday, July 25, 2006 6:30PM, $6

The Darkroom

10450 Florida Boulevard, Baton Rouge

This punk showcase from Philadelphia’s Spook City records, including head banging upstarts Will to Live, Strength for a Reason and Choose Your Weapon, promises on their website to sound like “a garbage truck falling off the Empire State Building.” Their glorious racket will be supported on the Baton Rouge stop by The Dog and Pony Show, east River Snorkeling and Kipper-N-Friends. All ages, and shows start at 7pm at the Darkroom. >>More
