T-Salé Cajun Band - Cajun music

Friday, July 14, 2006 8pm-10:30 pm, $6

American Legion Hall

151 S Wooddale Blvd, Baton Rouge

This Lafayette-based traditional Cajun five-piece has roots going back to Adam and Cyprien Landreneau, who brought Cajun music to the fabled Newport Folk Festival and toured Europe in 1965. Today, Cyp’s grandsons Jean-Jacques and Louie Aucoin keep the tradition alive. Dipping into their elder’s songbook for inspiration, the boys breathe new life into a well-spring of great Cajun music outside the standard repertoire, as well as original material. The show starts at 7 p.m. with Cajun dance lessons, so learn quick because the band starts at 8.More info...

Giant Bear - orchestral funkabilly

Friday July 14, 2006 10pm, $5

Red Star Bar

222 Laurel Street, Baton Rouge

The six-piece Giant Bear bring their self-described “Orchestral Funkabilly from Memphis” to a return engagement at the Red Star on Friday, in support of their oven-fresh recording, “New American Wilderness.” A virtual acoustic armada of guitars, banjos, flute and cello all come together to create some infectious, folky, literate pop. Think Squirrel Nut Zippers without the retro shtick or maybe a Tennessee version of the Pogues. Fun stuff no matter how you deconstruct it. Appearing with Return to Twang. More info...

The Terms, Dash Rip Rock, Spoonfed Tribe and We Landed on the Moon @ Studio Live

Friday July 21, 2006, 8:30 PM, $7

The Varsity Theatre

3353 Highland Rd, Baton Rouge

StudioLive, the music showcase at the Varsity produced by Maple Jam Records President, Greg Ladanyi, teams up with COX Communications bi-monthly to showcase an eclectic swath of the city’s musical talent. The Terms made their mark penning the theme song for LSU’s image makeover, and have been steadily gaining more and more national coverage. Dash Rip Rock, once a mainstay of the Baton Rouge live music scene, is poised for a glorious return as they finish "Hee Haw Hell, " an epic mix of the band’s country-infused punk and comedy co-written by XM's Lou Brutus, Bill Davis, Jello Biafra, Mojo Nixon and Rich Seigel. North Texas jam-dance sensation Spoonfed Tribe and stunning local indie upstarts We Landed on the Moon! also appear on the bill. Proceeds to go to the MusiCares musicians’ aid charity. More info...
