[Krew of Sneaux hits the slopes of Snow Mass]
Wednesday, February 1, 2006
For nearly 20 years, Pathway Services CEO Jack Rome has organized an annual guys-only ski retreat for a handful of friends he calls the Krewe of Sneaux (below). SnowMass, Colo., has been his destination of choice since 1993.
Why SnowMass?
It’s easy to fly in and out of Aspen. The ski mountain is great. I ski the long blue cruiser runs like Grey Wolf and The Big Burn.
Where does the group stay?
Woodrun Place Condos (800-365-4965). Six guys can comfortably sleep there. It has outstanding service, and it’s a ski in/ski out facility (below, right).
Best restaurant for a hearty breakfast?
Our condo! We’ve used the same caterer, Andrea Harris-Michelson (970-923-5818), since our first trip. She cooks breakfast and dinner for us each day. She sends me a menu a month beforehand, and I choose the meals for the entire trip. The only decision anyone has to make is the choice of juice for breakfast and either red or white wine for dinner.
Best place for nightlife?
In Snowmass Village, the Timber Mill (970-923-54427) is a great place for après ski and karaoke. In Aspen, The Little Nell Hotel is the spot for après ski (editor’s note: for fine dining and an extensive wine cellar, try Montagna at Little Nell, (970-920-6330). The Ritz-Carlton in Aspen (top, right) has outstanding after dinner entertainment, and Pete Adams did bring the house to its feet with his rendition of Mustang Sally.
What do you do beside ski?
The primary purpose of the trip is to get away with a great group of guys for a few days and relax. We have a Bible study each morning after breakfast, and then either we ski, go to the Snowmass Club for a workout and massage, or go to Aspen for a movie. No schedule—other than when the meals are served—no deadlines, no expectations.
