Sound bites from the beat of the City

The Dirty Dozen brass Band brought funky jazz to SoGo Live Sept. 9. It was the first night since Katrina smashed the band's hometown of New Orleans that Baton Rougeans and their reluctant guests took time to kick back and forget about life for a while. The Dirty Dozen enveloped their despair with warm hands of brass and funk.

JUST BE-BOPPING ALONG

Chris DeJohn is bringing more rhythm to BeBop Music Shop along Government Streer. " I play drums [he pulls double duty for The Roebucks and Righteous Buddha], so we're trying slowly to build up our capital of vintage kits," says the 29-year-old owner of one of the city's oldest guitar shops.

"People are more interested in the older instruments in general -- vitage tube amps and guitars. It's kind of anti the flashy, brand new sounds of the 80's."

DIABLE

Honey-voiced folkie and Baton Rouge native Kristin Diable goes electric on Shelter, her first full length album out now on Brooklyn -based Speakeasy records.

Diable gets a hand from additional Baton Rougeans-cum-New Yorkers, poor harvey, who have been CHristened the Mid City militia for Diable's latest jaunt.
