Southdowns Shopping Center gets a seasonal, local restaurant

Baton Rouge will get to try a new farm-to-table-style restaurant next week. Table Kitchen & Bar is set to open Tuesday, April 28, according to owners Scott and Michelle Wilson.

The restaurant will feature a rotating menu, focusing on fresh, local and seasonal ingredients and produce. Chef Curtis Froelich, who previously worked at the Country Club of Louisiana, says Table Kitchen & Bar will focus primarily on southern American cuisine. There will be a limited menu with pork, chicken, beef, pasta and seafood options as well as a few off-menu items.

“Some of the items we will start with include Vietnamese-style chicken wings, sugar cane ham and better cheddar,” Froelich says, explaining that the last item on the list is a starter of marinated cheddar served with housemade crackers. “This time of year is exciting because we’re about to come into a new harvest season. A lot of exciting produce is on the horizon. We look to have some neat dishes.”

Scott Wilson says the idea for the restaurant originated several years ago. The initial idea was a tapas-style restaurant that didn’t pan out. Over the last two years, however, he decided to travel and look at what other noted restaurants were doing.

The interior of the restaurant is a mix of rustic and minimalist design with a “nice-sized bar.” Table has room for around 140 patrons. The bar program will feature “the original top 20 cocktails,” Wilson says, including the Manhattan and Old Fashioned as examples.

The restaurant is at 4205 Perkins Road, in the former location of Portico in the Southdowns Shopping Center. Business hours will be Tuesday-Saturday 4 p.m.-till, and Sunday 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday will feature a brunch service with dishes such as grits and grillades, poached eggs and a “variety of snacks,” Froelich says.
