Spatula Diaries: Pumpkin spice smoothies

From lattes to beer to cereal bars, a wide variety of food and drink is getting a seasonal lift from pumpkin. And it’s not just pumpkin by its lonesome—it’s pumpkin spice, reflecting the addition of the autumnal spices you find in pumpkin pie, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice.

Pumpkin spice is a flavor that also works great in at-home smoothies. Combine canned pumpkin with plain or vanilla yogurt, cinnamon and a few additional ingredients for a creamy, healthy breakfast that both kids and adults will embrace. Localize it with the addition of a sweet Louisiana satsuma.

Pumpkin Spice Smoothies
Serves 2

1 cup canned pumpkin
1 cup plain Greek yogurt (use vanilla yogurt if you prefer your smoothies sweeter)
1 banana, peeled
8 oz. canned pineapple (sliced, chunks or crushed) with juice, or two peeled Louisiana satumas
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
Cinnamon sugar and cinnamon sticks for garnish

Combine all ingredients in a blender or juicer and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve with straws, a shake of cinnamon sugar and cinnamon sticks.
