Side by side: Comforting apps and side dishes


A comforting dish doesn’t have to be an entree—apps and sides are often the most craveable, from gravy-soaked fries to creamy mashed potatoes. And it’s certainly hard to imagine any holiday feast without all the fixings.

Our favorite sides are the ones that take the classics to a new level. Fried cheese curds leave mozzarella sticks in their dust, while Parmesan and garlic can transform your momma’s grits into something sensational. Boudin balls are a Louisiana staple, but stuffed with pepperjack cheese, they’re spicy, gooey goodness. And biscuits belong on any hearty plate, but drop the balls of dough into a deep-fryer instead of baking them in the oven and you’ve got a soft and fluffy dream. Next time you’re ordering dinner, opt for a side you’ll remember.
