Restaurant outlook: The latest on upcoming Baton Rouge restaurants and bars

We at 225 Dine make it our mission to find out the latest on the local culinary scene, from new cafés and bars to updated menus at local restaurants, to food events and everything in between. Sometimes, the list of new spots on the horizon to eat and drink becomes so long, it’s hard to keep track of it all.

We thought you might feel the same way. So here’s a look at what we’re anxiously anticipating in Baton Rouge in the coming months. If you’ve got a restaurant or bar you’re itching to find out more about, let us know in the comments. And look for the latest news in upcoming issues of 225 Dine.

What we’re watching:

Driftwood Cask & Barrel: Originally set to open in late April at 326 Third St. downtown, the Mississippi River-themed gastropub has run into some construction delays and is about a month behind schedule. Co-owner Sean Rivera says the process is back on track now, and is planning on an early summer opening. Find out more here.

Magpie Cafe Downtown: The much anticipated, largely expanded version of Magpie Cafe at The Commerce Building is about a third of the way built out, owner James Jacobs says. Predicting an opening date this early is difficult, he says, but he and his wife, Lina, are hoping for a late June or early August opening. Construction on The Commerce Building has already included the city’s first permanent “parklet” in front of the Magpie space.

Curbside Burgers: Many burger fans have been missing this local staple since Curbside pulled out of its partnership with Barcadia, but the KGB and the rest of the signature lineup will be back in less than six months. Owner Nick Hufft and his crew have cleared the lot and begun exterior construction on Curbside’s brick-and-mortar home next to Calandro’s on Government Street, and the restaurant is on track for an October opening.

Capital Heights Beer Garden: From the team that brought you Radio Bar, plans for the Capital Heights Beer Garden have been quiet since the push for zoning changes in the fall. Partner Kellie Paxton confirms the gears are still turning, with all permits secured and the design phase in progress. The team hopes to begin construction soon and be open by spring 2017.

Recent additions with expanded hours:

Goûter Restaurant is now open for dinner. The much-anticipated restaurant from chef Chris Wadsworth had been open only at lunchtime during its soft opening phase and just started dinner service this weekend. The new hours are Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5 p.m.-9 p.m.; and Saturday 5 p.m.-10 p.m.

The Overpass Merchant has geared up for its grand opening this month on May 21, when it plans to officially roll out its brunch service and menu with live jazz and nitro brew poured by Cafeciteaux. From there, brunch will become a regular weekend feature.
