Fast break: Trying tacos at La Tienda Latina y Taqueria

La Tienda Latina y Taqueria sits tucked away in a shopping center near the end of Siegen Lane, just waiting to be discovered by Mexican food lovers.

After living in Baton Rouge for more than a year, I was surprised I hadn’t heard about this restaurant. It seems like a place you would either accidentally stumble upon while Googling “tacos Baton Rouge,” or someone would recommend it to you.

Tortas, tostadas, gorditas, parrilladas … this restaurant is authentic Mexican.

The tostadas pastor, or marinated pork enchilada, was set atop a crispy baked corn tortilla. Everything was fresh. The lettuce was cold and crunchy, the tomatoes were ripe, and the pork was hot and flavorful.

I was disappointed I had never previously experienced a torta until visiting La Tienda. It’s a Mexican sandwich served stuffed with refried beans, lettuce, avocado, jalapeno, cheese and a meat of your choice, served on a roll. I chose asada (steak) and it didn’t disappoint.

La Tienda uses a walk-up style system for both dine-in and to-go orders. The restaurant doubles as a grocery store that sells the same produce, meats and tortillas used in the restaurant.

La Tienda Latina y Taqueria is at 6031 Siegen Lane. The restaurant is open Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m., and Sundays, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
