Fast Break: Po-boys at Marty J’s in Baton Rouge

State senator-turned-restaurateur Marty Chabert has blessed Baton Rouge with steaming po-boys, crispy fried seafood and hot plates filled to the brim with ettouffee, mashed potatoes and more.

The restaurant’s name—Marty J’s Seafood, Meats and Po-boys—tells you what to expect. The menu has all the classics, like roast beef, hamburger, grilled chicken, ham, fried shrimp, catfish and crawfish.

Coming from the New Orleans area, you bet I scouted Baton Rouge for the best po-boys and etouffee when I moved here. Marty J’s shrimp po-boy has put the restaurant on my list of “I’ll be back” places.

As a south Louisiana native, I grew up already loving shrimp in any form—boiled, grilled, fried, wrapped in bacon. You name it. But take a hearty serving of fried shrimp, add pepper jack cheese, tomatoes and French bread, and you’ve got what might be the world’s best sandwich (after muffalettas, of course).

Marty J’s also offers hamburgers, salads and varying daily lunch specials. The restaurant has a lively atmosphere and quick walk-up ordering service, so it’s perfect for a quick lunch.

In addition to serving as a restaurant, Marty J’s sells ready-to-cook meats and seafood.

There are two Baton Rouge locations: 13434 Perkins Road and 4001 Nicholson Drive. Marty J’s is open 11 a.m.-8:30 p.m. every day. Find out more and see daily lunch specials here.
